DAY 1
DISCOVERING THE MAGIC OF READING (DMR)

A. Pre-Reading:
                1. Activating Prior Knowledge and Building Background
                                Have you ever joined a club? What is the name of your club?
                2. Unlocking of Difficulties:
                                A. Unlock the meaning of the following words through context clues.
                Proceed               :               After the nomination, they will proceed  to the counting of votes.
                Adjourned          :               The teachers are ready to go home because the meeting is adjourned.
                Elected                 :               During the election, Jim was elected as president of the class.
                                B. Fill in each blank with the correct word.
                1. Allan was  _______ president of the Future Homemaker’s Club.

3. Previewing:
                I am going to read a dialogue about a club meeting.
4. Setting the Purpose for Reading:
                Read the title of the story once again. From the title, what do you like to find out?
                Motive Question:
                                (Publish pupils’ questions on the board).
B. Constructing Meaning
                Active Reading:
                                Read the story twice. In the first reading, let the pupils read without stopping. In the second reading, let them stop at certain portions to answer prediction questions.
                               
Electing Club Officers

                Teacher:              The meeting will please come to order. Ramon will act as chairman. Lita will act as secretary                                                         until  you have elected the officers.
STOP: What do you think Ramon will do?
                                                Ramon will now preside over the meeting. I will now turn the table over him.
                Ramon:                Thank you. The table is now open for nomination for president.
STOP: What do you think the class will do?
                Ruben:                                 Mr. Chairman, may I have the floor?
                Ramon:                                Yes, Ruben.  (The chairman recognizes Ruben)
                Ruben:                                 I nominate Carlos Cruz for president.
                Ramon:                                Carlos Cruz has been nominated for president.
                Clarita:                 Mr. Chairman, I nominate Rosa Castro for president.
                Carlos :                 I move that the nomination for president or our club be closed.

STOP: Why do you think they need to close the nomination?
What do you think  they would do after Carlos closed the nomination?

                Lita         :               I second the motion.

STOP:  How does Ramon answer that motion?

                Ramon:                                It has been moved and seconded that the nomination for president be closed. All those in favor                                                     say “YES”. All those against say “NO”. (Nobody says No). The nomination for president is now                                                       closed.
STOP: What is the next step after Ramon closed the nomination?

                                                Let us proceed with the voting. Those in favor of Carlos raise your right hand. The secretary will
                                                Count the number of hands raised and write it on Carlos’s name. Those in favor of Rosa Castro
                                                raise your right hand. Carlos has 28 votes and Rosa has 22 votes. Carlos is elected as Club                                                              president. Mr. President, please take over. (Carlos takes over and presides over the election of                                                                 the rest of the officers. Then he closes the meeting).

                Carlos:                  The meeting is adjourned.
DAY 2   
C. Post Reading:
                After reading, answer the comprehension questions and form small groups. Assign each group on activity to work on.
